James and Charlotte were both late summer/early fall babies, so my third pregnancy was actually my first time being heavily pregnant during the wintertime. With my past two pregnancies, I approached maternity dressing by just throwing on breezy dresses for the most part. I wasn’t pregnant enough where I needed to really adjust my wardrobe until it was warm outside and then a sundress was the easy answer. This time around, dressing the bump is a whole different experience and I’ve been on the hunt for cute winter maternity outfits.
Having been pregnant during both seasons, I have to say, I don’t know that one season is easier to dress for than the other. They both have upsides and downsides. The upside of being pregnant in summer is you can throw on a dress and be done and there’s lots of breezy sundresses that will accommodate a bump, so you don’t have to invest in many maternity clothes. I mostly just bought a pair of maternity shorts and maternity swimsuits. But you’re also pregnant during bathing suit season, which is its own thing, and being hot and sticky at nine months pregnant can be a lot. With that said, I didn’t really mind it and loved being able to jump in a pool and feel weightless for a bit. The upside of being pregnant during the winter is that you can wear leggings and oversized sweaters on repeat, which has worked well for me as I’ve been working from home due to the pandemic. I have been forced to consider investing in maternity jeans and leggings recently — at a little over seven months, it’s hard to squeeze into my non-maternity pants. And some of my sweaters are getting a little cropped with my growing bump, so I’m needing to rely on my longer styles and consider getting a few more tunic styles to carry me through the rest of this pregnancy. I found putting together cute winter maternity outfits for the office a little more challenging, but I’ve scored some great tent-style and empire-waist dresses from Ulla Johjnson, Doen, and Sea that work well and we’re great for the holidays as well.
Still, getting dressed in winter takes extra thought (and layers) and I’m finding it a little harder to put together winter maternity outfits. I know a lot of you are expecting right now and looking for some style inspo (getting lots of DMs about it), so I thought I’d put together a blog post with my favorite winter maternity outfits.
