Yeah, it’s a staple. But staples usually feel so… ok, I’ll say it, basic, to me. It’s not that I don’t see the value in classic pieces — these days, that’s basically all I’m investing in. It’s just that when the classic is the same old one you wore as a child and you’re starting to feel like you should be dressing like an adult, especially if you still don’t feel like an adult despite being through the prolonged adolescent phase and into the adult phase as clearly marked by friends having babies and buying houses in the burbs. A denim skirt definitely falls into that basic-feeling category for me and every time I pick it up, I feel so blah, even though they’re totally having a street style resurgence the past couple of seasons. I think it’s mainly because it feels like everything I have to wear with it is just so basic, and the trick to making it look cool (besides mile long off-duty model legs) is to pair it with at least one not-basic and totally right-now piece.
