Going to dinner with couple friends is not just an excuse to catch up with friends and get out of the house for a fun date night, but also a reason to put on something that isn’t workwear or momwear. I mean I don’t know about you, but I’ve got two usual ways of dressing — for the office or for weekends at home. So the only time I get to wear something that’s at all dressy or fun is when we go out, usually with friends. And these days, our idea of a wild night out is a dinner party with friends, whether that’s at someone’s house or a restaurant. Still, I always struggle with picking out what to wear to a dinner party. I long ago gave up my going out tops even though they are now making a comeback along with everything else from the early 2000s. I don’t know why since who really cares, but I get super stressed before going out with friends, end up with half my closet scattered over my bed and floor, and arguing with my husband because I’m running late because I can’t figure out what to wear. (Anyone else’s husbands tell them they look great without looking up from their phones and no matter what they’re wearing? Like thanks for the help.)
For some reason, picking out a dinner party outfit, even if we’re just going to eat with good friends who couldn’t care less what I look like, stresses me out. It’s probably because I don’t have a lot of “going out” clothes now that hitting the bars and clubs isn’t in my regular weekend lineup. I find my work dresses are either too “extra” (I work in women’s magazines, after all) or corporate feeling and my usual weekend wear is too schlumpy mom. My approach to picking out what to wear to a dinner party or really dinner out with friends is to pair jeans with a cute top and fun heels. Sadly, I recently realized I don’t have many cute going out tops, so that’s something I’m going to add to my shopping list this month. In winter, I’ll throw on a fancy sweater, or in spring and summer, I might opt for a breezy dress instead.
Here are my favorite ideas for what to wear to a dinner party.
