The plaid shirt has been everything from a preppy staple to a grunge accessory to a lumbersexual must-have, but these days it’s as ubiquitous as the denim jacket, elevating it to the ranks of wardrobe staple. Wear it with anything — tucked into a sparkly pencil skirt or a pair of boyfriend trousers, knotted over a ball gown or unbuttoned over a well-worn tee, paired with jeans and a beanie or leather skinnies and heels, tied around the waist of your fave cutoffs, sweater dress, or flirty mini — to instantly score that effortless cool-girl appeal. Kind of amazing what one shirt can do. It just may be the American equivalent of the French red lip. Here are my favorite ways to wear plaid shirts.
