More luxe than fringe but just fun, plumes add a festive touch to just about everything — skirts and dresses to tops and jackets. I don’t know what it is about this festive embellishment, but I love clothes and accessories with feather detailing. They’re certainly having a moment right now, but they’ll never go out of style as a luxe embellishment. It adds a touch of rich glam to any look but it’s also fun and festive, making it perfect for a party, the holidays or when you just want to be a little extra. Figuring out how to strike the balance without looking too over the top is key, so I thought I’d pull together a post on how to wear feathers.
Plus, it gives me an excuse to wear more feathers. The trick is balancing the glam statement the feathers make so that you’re not channeling too much bird energy. I prefer to keep the feathers as a detail — a trim along the cuffs of your shirt or the hem of your dress, for example. If you’re going all-out with the feathres, I tend to stick to smaller pieces like a clutch. But I am also a big fan of a feathered mini skirt, so you can certainly do it with a larger piece. Whether you go big with all-over feathers, or more low-key with plume trim, let the feathers take center stage, keeping the rest of your look simple and subtle. Of course, I’m going to contradict myself here and say that feathers can work nicely with a bolder print too as long as they’re a detail and not competing with the print. It’s really about the balance. I even like feathers for every day as long as they’re paired with a more daytime friendly piece like a button-up with feather-trimmed sleeves or a sweater with some feather detailing. Here are some of my favorite ideas for how to wear feathers.
