With the weather totally all over the place this summer, it’s hard to know whether you’ll need  a jacket when you walk outside in the morning. The only thing I can count on is the office always being ridiculously frosty. Which is why the long, light coat is perf for this year’s prolonged spring to summer transition. Layered over a sleeveless dress, it’s lighter than a wool blazer or moto jacket and chicer than a classic cardigan. It’s also perfect for staying warm in an over-AC’d office. Silky blends are my preference — they’re dressier for work or a night out and dresses up a casual dress. But linen or cotton are also light for summer and less try-hard, and a lightweight knit is more comfy for beach weekends. Wear it as an office topper, over black pants and heels, a pencil skirt, or dresses. Or, toss it on over cutoff shorts and casual sneakers or birks with a duster coat to dress them up for that cool blogger look. Or try it as a shirt/dress hybrid, buttoning up only a few in the middle and layering shorts or skinnies underneath for a fashion-forward look. Or button a few more buttons and don’t wear any underneath and rock it as a dress.
