The worst fashion (or at least denim) offense is now the hottest fashion trend. Yes friends, I’m talking about mom jeans. First, a quick primer in case you’re not sure what exactly “mom jeans” are. Honestly, I wasn’t totally sure how to describe them even though I could point to them if I saw them, so I thought I’d share Wikepedia’s definition since we know it’s accurate (har har but actually I think their description is pretty spot on): “Mom jeans is an informal term for high-waisted women’s jeans that were first fashionable in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the late 1990s and 2000s they were mainly worn by adult American women and considered ‘old’ by younger women.” So there you have it. Honestly, mom jeans get a bad wrap. Why do we even call them mom jeans and why does it have sort of a negative connotation? Of course moms wear jeans and we’re hip and we’re cool and our jeans are too. Lol. I blame the 80s moms, aka my moms, and those terrible unflattering jeans they wore that I’m now wearing again because everything old is new again? So of course I thought we all needed a post on how to wear mom jeans (without looking like your mom). Clever, right?
But seriously, their rep for being the ultimate in unflattering isn’t at all true. The high-waist and wider bottom doesn’t require the same flat belly and tiny, high butt as other jeans, and the slightly wider leg of a straight style can be more forgiving than the skinny style. The key to pulling off mom jeans is to either show or hide your waist by pairing them with a cropped tops or a tucked in top, or a long tunic, oxford, or oversized sweater. Here are ideas and inspiration for how to wear mom jeans (without looking like your mom). But really aren’t all jeans mom jeans because they’re basically our uniform, and shouldn’t we just be allowed to wear whatever we want in peace considering the magnitude of our role? Just saying…
But while we fight the battle of respect for our denim, here are ideas for how to wear mom jeans, because apparently I wear mom jeans all the time.
