Your mom probably warned you never to wear a short skirt to work, but you can throw that piece of 1960s fashion wisdom out the door, along with the other old and dated fashion rules. Above-the-knee hemlines are hot this season and in certain (the key word being certain — I don’t want to get blamed for any HR infractions) offices, they can be totally work appropriate — when paired with the right tops and footwear. The trick for how to wear mini skirts to work is to keep your heel low, or use tights and boots to add extra coverage below the waist. Above the waist stick to more conservative necklines to balance the leggier look. Of course, micro minis will never be office appropriate, at least imo, so my recommendation is to stick to a skirt cut just above the knee. With that said, there are certain offices and types of work where mini skirts probably won’t fly. I am a firm believer in wearing what you want and not dictating what women should wear. But, the world doesn’t always work that way, and sometimes it’s worth it to follow the office dress code to keep the focus on work … at least until you work your way up to the C suite and can rewrite the rules.
