I can’t promise your hair will look great after you take it off, but while you’re rocking the go-to winter accessory, you’re pretty much guaranteed to look cool. Not that that’s the reason I wear a beanie or winter hat. My purposes in wearing a hat are purely practical — I absolutely abhor being cold and I don’t like washing my hair, particularly in winter. I just don’t like getting dressed or doing much of anything during the peak winter doldrums tbh. So tossing on a beanie whenever I have to go outside in public is an easy way to hide needs-to-be-shampooed hair and to stay warm on days I must leave the house, which unfortunately, since having kids is every day. It’s kind of like sunglasses and how they can hide tired, makeup free eyes while also protecting against sun damage and wrinkles. So really a hat is a must-have accessory in winter imo, and today I’m sharing some tips and ideas for how to wear a beanie,
First, let’s define beanie. I feel like these days, people use the word beanie interchangeably with winter hat, but technically, according to Vocabulary.com, “A beanie is a small, round, brimless hat… Traditionally, a beanie was a flat, close-fitting hat without a brim, sometimes also called a skullcap.” So really it’s a winter hat without a pom pom on it even though I feel like now people call any winter hat a beanie. And some tips for how to wear a beanie:
Show a little bit of hair: It’s more flattering when you show a bit in front. According to Cosmopolitan.com, “Lay the front of the beanie a couple inches away from your hairline but not too far away that it slides off. It’s tricky, I know, but I believe in you. Pulling it slightly over your ears can help secure it better, and you’re good to go.”
Choose a beanie based on how you want to wear it: Some beanies fit a bit tighter on the head while others are long enough to wear further back so select one based on how you want to wear it.
Wear it loose or tight: I prefer a more polished look, so I don’t pull a beanie back off my head, but if you’re going for the more hipster style, just pull it slight off the front of your head so excess slouches behind your head.
Consider the material: I’m really sensitive to itch, so I always try on beanies first and opt for pure cashmere, which I find less itchy than wool.
Make sure it fits right: You don’t want one that’s too lose that it’ll fall off your head or too tight that it’s constricting.
