I don’t know what it is, but for some reason, come winter, all I want to wear is white. Maybe it’s to brighten up the dreariness of days that turn dark by 4pm, or the fact that it still feels slightly subversive to wear white once it turns cold (even if that old white after Labor Day rule is so old we really don’t need to address it further). Or it could just be the fact that it simply couldn’t look chicer. It’s so elegant, so chic to wear a white skirt in winter.
White skirts are so versatile, whether in crisp white or a more wintery white or ivory (I love this one for the office). A white skirt adds crisp polish to chunky sweaters and makes suede boots and furry jackets look extra plush. The trick to wear a white skirt in winter is simply to pair it with heavier fabrics and textures — a chunky oatmeal sweater or a wool coat. I love the look contrasted against wintry neutrals like oatmeal, grey, black, and navy. But if you can trust yourself not to spill or get your whites all dirty, pairing it with more white is an eternally chic choice. White on white or white on ivory is my favorite look. Or, for a bold contrast, a pop of pastel can feel feminine and unexpected in the dead of winter, while a deep burgundy or emerald brings a more seasonally appropriate feel.
Styling a white skirt for winter can be a chic and versatile way to incorporate a summery piece into your cold-weather wardrobe. Here are some tips and outfit ideas for wearing a white skirt in the winter:
Choose the right fabric. Opt for a white skirt made from heavier, warmer fabrics such as wool, corduroy, leather, or a thick cotton. These materials will help keep you warm in the colder months and make your look less summery than a lighter fabric like linen.
Pair It with heavier fabrics and layers. Pair your white skirt with a chunky knit or cashmere sweater. Or add a wool blazer or jacket.
Add Tights. Wear opaque or patterned tights underneath your skirt to keep your legs warm.
Opt for a monochromatic look or contrasting colors. You can create a monochromatic look by pairing your white skirt with white or similar shades for an elegant and clean appearance. Alternatively, contrasting colors like black, gray, deep burgundy, or forest green can make your white skirt stand out.
