Today is our anniversary — lucky number 8. It’s hard for me to believe that we got married eight years ago (here are some pics of our winter wedding). On the one hand, it feels like it was just yesterday and on the other hand, it feels like a lifetime ago. To be honest, we have never been great about celebrating anniversaries. My birthday is in March and then our anniversary is a couple weeks later, and it usually coincides with spring break. We didn’t do anything big for our fifth wedding anniversary because I was pregnant with Charlotte and we were taking it easy. So for our sixth wedding anniversary, we decided to go back to the scene of the crime and spend a kid-free weekend at Sundance Resort, skiing, celebrating and reminiscing. We had all the plans made and it was going to be the first time we left the kids for a long weekend. Of course, those plans got thwarted by the arrival of Covid and we celebrated our sixth anniversary in quarantine with the kids at what we didn’t know was the beginning of a two (or is it three now?) year long pandemic.
Now, here we are, two years later celebrating yet another anniversary during Covid. Luckily, if you need help figuring out how to celebrate your anniversary during Covid, I’ve now had two of them and I am determined to make this year’s feel special. I came up with a list of ideas to run by the hubs and thought I’d share with you if you’re not sure how to mark your wedding anniversary during a pandemic. Here are my favorite ideas for how to celebrate your anniversary during Covid.
- Cook a special dinner at home — try a recipe from your wedding or recreate a meal of significance
- Outdoor dining – if it’s warm enough, consider eating outdoors at a restaurant (or if you feel comfortable and they’re open, eat indoors at your favorite spot)
- Rent out a movie theater – many movie theaters are allowing you to rent the whole place out for a showing. If you love seeing movies, this could be worth the splurge. This is also a fun idea if you can’t get a sitter and don’t mind watching something more kid-friendly.
- Or do an outdoor movie night – get a projector screen and watch a movie outdoors, with or without the kids
- Go for a hike
- Take a virtual cooking or wine tasting class (or if you feel comfortable, do it in-person)
- Take a road trip
- Order in from your favorite restaurant and set the table
- Make your partner breakfast in bed
- Attend a virtual concert
- Plan a tennis or paddle date followed by dinner
- Romantic brunch – sometimes it’s easier to steal away for brunch or to go out while the kids are in school if childcare is on the fritz
- Plan a getaway somewhere you feel comfortable visiting – pick a spot with low numbers or safety protocols you’re comfortable with and get away for a day or a few or even a week
- Go skiing – I love outdoor activities because less risky and fewer protocols to follow
- Ice skating – an old school date that’s still pretty cute
- Couples massages – hire someone to come to your home or hit up a spa if you feel comfortable
- Camping – if that’s your thing
- Game night – if you enjoy competition, whip out the Scrabble
- Takeout and a movie – sometimes you just need to throw in the towel, admit defeat and do something comfy and cozy
- Picnic – this sounds cheesy but it’s an outdoor option you can do socially distanced and it’s probably super cute and fun, especially if you bring the rose
