My kids are snackers as I think most kids are. Luckily, they are also pretty good eaters in general, but snacks are definitely a constant. They need at least one between breakfast and lunch, at least one after school, and sometimes one before or after any after school activities, and god help me if I get in the car or attempt to go anywhere really without snacks. I don’t mind. I like snacks too and loved them as a kid. And as long as I don’t let them snack too close to their next meal, they’re generally pretty good about eating at mealtime. So I’m willing to indulge their love of snacks, but because of the frequency of snack consumption in our house, it’s important to me to find healthy snacks for kids to serve James and Charlotte. I do think it’s important for kids to eat fruit and veggies and healthy proteins for snacks and I do try to mix those in, but I’m human and like any other busy mom, I also need snacks we can just grab in a pinch. I am always looking for a good balance and for inspiration for what to serve my kids, so I thought I’d share my favorite healthy snacks for kids. Check out my favorite healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners for kids too.
Yogurt – I love these pouches for the kids – they’re the lowest in sugar I’ve found and the kids like them. If we have more time, we’ll do yogurt, granola and fruit parfaits.
Ants on a Log – aka celery with peanut butter and raisins and the only way I can get my kids to eat celery
Trail Mix – I usually end up buying this but I wish I had the time/ability to make my own. I try to choose a low sugar option with healthy fats.
Apples and Peanut Butter
Orange Slices
Smoothies – always try to make sure there’s plenty of veggies mixed in with the fruit
Healthy Muffins – Here is my favorite recipe — they’re made with bananas, maple syrup and oats and you can pack in fruit or some chocolate chips to make them extra sweet. I also love Abe’s muffins as a quick on the go option.
Organic String Cheese
Turkey Rolls
Pear or Peach Slices
Grapes – I still cut them for the kids using this contraption
Hummus and Pita Chips – my kids aren’t keen on hummus yet but I keep trying
Hummus and Veggie Slices – as you can see, I will keep trying until they start to love the goodness that is hummus
Avocado Toast
Mashed Avocado with Sea Salt and Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers
Kale Chips
Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers – James doesn’t eat cheese (I think he has a lactose intolerance) but would serve with cheese if he did
Peanut Butter and Bananas
Multigrain Waffles – either plain or with peanut butter
Z Bars – these aren’t as low in sugar as I’d like so I make these more of a treat snack
Cucumber Slices with Ranch
Snap Peas
Once Upon a Farm Veggie and Fruit Pouches
Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies
Multigrain Cereal – my kids prefer it dry but if they weren’t dairy haters, I’d try as a bowl
Carrot Chips and Dip (usually ranch dressing although James isn’t in to dips)
Clementines or Mandarin Oranges – they love the mini slices
Purely Elizabeth Granola, Berries and Plain Greek Yogurt
Berries
Watermelon and Mango Slices
