If you’re like me, you probably have way too many shoes, and no intention of giving any of them up anytime soon. That’s why for part two of my closet cleaning series, we’ll be tackling ways to organize your shoes. Since they take up a lot of closet space, it’s key to figure out a smart system for organizing your shoes. There are many different ways to organize your shoes. The key is to pick an approach that will work with your closet space and allow you to easily see all your footwear. Otherwise, it’s out of sight, out of mind, and you might as well not have the shoes you can’t see, because you’ll never wear them. Displaying all your footwear so it’s easy to see is also important for helping you get dressed efficiently I’ve found, so you can easily see what you have and grab a pair that works.
There are lots of shoe storage options: Over-the-door storage is the space-saving arrangement that makes the most sense for small spaces and closets. The trick is to make sure you measure right, so every time you shut the door, you’re not getting your shoes jammed in the door. If you have space, shelves and cubbies are a great way to display your footwear and make sure each pair has a home. The only problem is if the cubbies and shelves are on the floor, like mine were in our last few homes, it’s harder to see them, especially if you have longer items hanging down over them. My ultimate pick, were space not an issue, would be a shoe closet. It’s probably one of my favorite ways to organize your shoes. A shoe closet allows for you to easily see and access all your shoes. Plus, my type A soul really loves everything to have its own place and space. But really any of these options will work, and in some cases, you may need to do a combo to accommodate your collection.
Once you have figured out a shoe organization system, it’s time to sort them. Yes, within the storage system, I have another set of ways to organize your shoes, because the more organized you are, the easier it is to get dressed. I prefer to sort by type (pumps, flats, wedges, sandals, sneakers, boots, etc.) and then color-coordinate from there. But some people prefer to color-coordinate first, and others like to organize by how often they tend to wear them, putting the most worn shoes towards the front.
Here are my favorite ways to organize your shoes.
LINED-UP ON FLOOR ON RACKS
OVER-THE-DOOR SHOE RACK
HANGING SHOE RACK
BUILT-IN SHOE RACKS
SHOE CABINETS
INCLINED SHOE SHELVES
SHOE BOXES
One of my favorite ways to organize your shoes is putting photos of each pair on the outside of the boxes.
CABINET OR WARDROBE
COLOR-COORDINATED ON SHELVES
BOOKSHELVES
If you have an extra bookcase in the basement or don’t mind doing an Ikea run, this is one of the easiest ways to organize your shoes.
SHOE CUBBIES
BOOTS HUNG ON HOOKS ON RODS
When thinking about ways to organize your shoes, don’t forget about boots. They’re often the hardest to store.
