I was sorta, totally hoping we could just skip the whole winter thing and move straight to spring this year, especially after we had that 60 degree day to kick off December. But alas, winter is here, on the East Coast at least and along with it cold temperatures. I, for one, can’t stand to be cold, and it’s hard enough to motivate to get out of bed let alone to put on anything but a big sweater and sweatpants when it’s freezing outside. But sadly, I am often forced to leave my house during the wintertime, so I really need some motivation to get dressed for the next few months. The good news is, I have a lot of experience figuring out what to wear when it’s freezing out. I grew up in Chicago where cold doesn’t even begin to describe the winters, went to college upstate where it snowed every day from November to May, and have recently moved to Connecticut where winters are a bit more intense than in NYC. (Side note: It’s often freezing in winter in NYC, but for a Chicago-raised girl, the winters are pretty mild.)
The trick to figuring out what to wear when it’s freezing out is layers. And lots of them. I often will start with a long underwear base layer if possible because I am that averse to feeling cold. Either way, layering on long sleeves and knitwear and coats helps a ton and I always do wool tights or leggings under dresses and skirts and wool or cashmere socks with my boots or shoes to ensure extra warmth. If you’re not feeling inspired by the weather (and really, how could you when it’s cold and gets dark at 4pm?), here are ideas and inspiration for what to wear when it’s freezing out.
