First it was the baby showers, then we all had our babies, and now it’s the kids’ birthday parties. I don’t know about you, but they’re taking over my weekends and often the social event of the week (lol I’m pathetic I know). But as such, they deserve cute outfits. Figuring out what to wear to a kid’s birthday party is not exactly like dressing for an adult’s birthday party. Kids are messy and their parties often involve some form of activity that doesn’t exactly mesh well with heels or dry-clean only dresses. Still, leggings and a tee doesn’t exactly live up to the effort involved in an event that often involves hired kiddy entertainment, catered food, and personalized decorations (is it me, or have kid’s birthday parties gotten more over the top every year?). Oh, and for some of us, the most social interaction with other parents you’ll get in a week. For me, I feel like sometimes the birthday parties are where I meet some of the parents in the class for the first time or really talk to them, so I also like to dress the part to make a good enough impression while also keeping it casual and comfy enough to chase after my crazy kids and serve as their human napkin for the pizza and cake.
The trick to figuring out what to wear to a kid’s birthday party is finding that perfect blend of comfy and casual and kid/baby-proof but still chic. Easy enough, right? But before you roll your eyes at me, I have gathered tons of kids’ birthday party outfit ideas for you. I like to go with a dress that is easily washable (Hill House nap dresses are a fave) or jeans and a cute top (preferably one that is easy to clean and printed to hide any stains). I almost always go with sneakers or flats because my kids are animals and I spend half the time chasing after them. Plus, most parties are outdoors, which means navigating grass so I like to keep it functional.
Since birthday party season is truly every season once you have kids, I put together a guide for what to wear to a kid’s birthday party with ideas for every season.
