One of my favorite springtime events, the Kentucky Derby, is coming up in a couple weekends, and I can’t wait. The Derby is basically a reason to dress up, wear a fun hat, day drink and bet — what more could you want? Plus, I’m not a huge fan of watching sports — I get bored after awhile. But the Derby is like 20 seconds so it’s really the perfect sporting event for me. There are usually fun Derby parties that pop up or it’s an excuse to watch with some friends and get-together and actually celebrate the arrival of warm weather and spring. Living on the east coat, the Kentucky Derby is the start of that special month, where the weather is warm and everyone is still in town on weekend (ie before Memorial Day when everyone flees to the Hamptons or Nantucket or starts on their summer routines), so it’s the perfect time to get together with friends — and look cute. Plus, I’m down with anytime I can wear a pretty dress and a big crazy hat and pretend to care about horses while drinking Mint Juleps. Of course, that brings up the question: what to wear to a Derby party?
If you got invited to watch the horse race somewhere fun and are trying to figure out what to wear to a Derby party, you’re pretty safe with a pretty sundress and hat. Pastels are the unofficial color of the Derby but you could also go with white or a light neutral. I would not wear all black for the occasion. Channel your best southern style for this affair. If you’re not sure what to wear to a Derby party, I’ve pulled up some inspo — plus, some dresses and hats that would be perfect for the occasion.
