We spend a lot of weekends up in the country at my husband’s family’s lake house upstate. The house is built right on a private lake in the middle of what feels like nowhere, and it’s so peaceful and relaxing. It’s especially beautiful to visit during the fall when the leaves are changing and the weather is still nice enough to enjoy the lake. We love going for long walks and hikes with the kids, fly fishing, watching Dakota chase the ball into the lake, making pancakes in our PJ’s in the morning, watching movies in front of the huge roaring fire, and roasting S’mores around the fire pit. It’s really a magical spot. There are also fun places to go apple picking and pumpkin picking and fun fall fairs in the area, so we really like to get in the quintessential (instagrammable) fall activities while we’re up there. I always pack cute fall clothes for our weekends upstate, since I know we’ll be taking lots of family pics. Since I’m a planner and always plan out outfits when I pack — and I get lots of requests for outfit ideas for fall weekends away — I thought I’d pull together a quick guide for what to wear for a fall weekend in the country.
I love that going to the lake in fall is a great excuse to whip out the Hunter Boots, jeans and flannels, cozy sweaters and fleeces. I rarely bring anything too fancy, but on the occasions I do pack a dress, it’s usually a flowy maxi dress in a pretty fall print that I pair with a cardigan. If you’re planning to hit the road this fall and take advantage of the beautiful changing leaves to snap some photos, here’s a little guide for what to wear for a fall weekend in the country.
