Because it can’t possibly be fall yet… Can it?
Cropped Overalls
Army green easily transitions into fall. With lace-up heels and a black crop top, it’s the perfect going-out look for warm fall nights and weekends.
Suede Skirt
The summer trend is still big for fall (as is suede in general). When it’s still pretty hot out, darker red and navy stripes keep it from feeling too summer nautical but still feel appropriate for 70 and 80 degree temps.
A chambray shirt and bandana continue that classically cool vibe when the weather cools.
White Tunic
The summer staple (at least for me), transitions seamlessly into fall when contrasted with black. A midi skirt dresses it up for the office while luxe black slides or tall gladiator sandals won’t look too bundled up for the early fall heat.
Darker floral prints seamlessly transition crisp whites and gladiator sandals into fall.
Denim Dress
Also, going strong into fall is denim, which makes last season’s denim dress the perfect transitional piece to rock through the next season. While darker washes (bonus points for trendy fraying along the edges) definitely feel more “fall,” lighter ones can work just as easily with darker accessories.
White Pants
I think by now it’s safe to say we all know the old rule about not wearing white after Labor Day is total b.s. (and in fact, wearing white anytime other than summer is actually even chicer). But just in case you needed proof, try pairing white trousers, culottes, or jeans with sandals and a classic fall jacket and wait for the compliments to start rolling in.
A moto adds edge and looks incredibly cool with white-on-white.
Or for a really on-trend look toss a long sleeveless jacket over an all-white look.
A statement jacket in a rich brocade adds a luxe fall vibe to crisp white denim.
Summer Prints
Leave it to Olivia Palermo to seamlessly make summer’s boho prints look like they’re part of the fall collections. A classic fall print like plaid makes boho prints feel autumn appropriate, especially when finished off with suede flats.
Nautical stripes and hues are early fall perfection when teamed with chunky knits and flats. Trade the lace-up sandals for lace-up ballet flats for an on-trend look.
Same trick works for breezy culottes and more abstract prints.
White Skirts and Dresses
The two summer staples could almost be mistaken for fall staples, no? A white pencil skirt looks fresh for fall with a chambray shirt and darker denim jacket. A western belt and bandana add fall trend touches to
Black booties are all you need to transition a crisp white shirtdress into fall. It really doesn’t get any easier than that.
Denim Skirt
At this point, a denim skirt is basically a year-round staple, but during the first few weeks of a new season when you only want to wear the new, new, it can feel too summer. But Kendall Jenner reinvents her frayed mini into a fall must-have by pairing it with a burnt orange mock neck tank and suede lace-up booties.
Summer Stripes
A camel turtleneck sweater and black booties and a matching bucket bag make even a breezy blue and white stripes fall-ready. Genius, really.
Meanwhile, a white oxford topped with a boyfriend blazer or lightweight coat in black, navy, or grey makes summery weekend stripes office-ready come fall.
Sandals
While lights and whites look so chic with sandals, come September, a dark midi skirt and grey tank are the perf lunch or work outfit for warding off the early-fall heat in style.
Dark florals and lace up sandals are an elegant way to weather an Indian summer.
Monochromatic looks are the epitome of chic in my opinion, and offer a fresh play on ’70s proportions. A pair of black slides adds a subtle touch of cool nonchalance to a navy tunic and flares that gives it the effortless elegance that I am constantly striving for.
Espadrilles
They may be the epitome of summer footwear, but even espadrilles can work in early fall. Trade your white jeans for cropped denim and toss on a tee and espadrilles work for a weekend farmer’s market run, or brunch with the girls.
Jumpsuits
The beauty of a jumpsuit is that it can work year-round, and in black, it functions much like an LBD. Swap the sandals for mules or peep-toe booties for an easy throw-on-and-go night-out look that will last you all fall.
Off-the-Shoulder Shirt
Shoulder are still having their moment in the spotlight, but in crisp whites and pastels, the look screams summer. Contrast summery hues with autumn shades (like golden yellow and deep plum and burgundy) and toss in some textures to balance lighter fabrics for fall.
Then again if you wisely opted for black, you urbanite, you, you’re in luck. Just toss on more black and you’re good to go for date night with the hubs or bae, or girls’ night with the besties.
Army Pants
Laid back for summer weekends at the farmer’s market, the army green hue seamlessly bridges the summer-to-fall transition. With a leather tank summer’s weekend pants become fall’s going-out pants.
Ellen Richman says
Again in this series, classic silhouettes had much to offer while the rest just looked trashy trendy.
