While slightly less practical in the keep-you-warm department, this winter’s trendy alternative to the beanie — a wide-brim hat— definitely wins in the makes-you-look-cool arena. Not to mention it’s perfect for concealing bad hair days and making jeans and a tee, or even pajamas look chic and pulled-together. My fair skin appreciates all the sun protection it can get, even in the colder months. As I get older, I appreciate sun protection more than ever, and while I do wear sunscreen every day (this is my favorite sunscreen — literally the best everyday sunscreen/moisturizer you will ever try), on sunny cold days, I prefer the added protection of a hat. While beanies are cute, they don’t protect your face or keep you from squinting. But a wide-brim hat is the perfect answer to sunny fall and winter days. (I especially love to take it on ski trips when the sun is really strong and reflecting off the snow.) I know generally hats can seem like one of the trickier accessories to pull off, but I promise it’s easier to figure out how wear a wide-brim hat than it looks.
A wide-brim hat is the perfect compliment to jeans and wintry layers for the weekend. You can channel a ’70s vibe with flares and a blazer and heels, or go more casual with boots and a sweater. I also love the look with wide-leg trousers for your walk to work. But you can also try the look with a midi dress or skirt. If you’re going for a more boho feel, toss one on with a maxi dress and cardigan for a weekend in the country. It’s actually just as versatile as a beanie as these street style pics will show.
