I honestly did not think I would be writing a post on going out tops as a mom of three who lives in suburbs and whose clubbing days are long gone and whose version of going out typically involves being in bed by 10pm. But here we are, it’s 2024, and mama needs some going out tops. The fact is that I have a lot of office-appropriate tops, casual tees and tops for everyday/mom-ing and weekends, knits that can be dressed up or down, but what I don’t have a lot of is tops to wear on date nights or when going to dinner with friends or going to a friend’s birthday party when I want to want jeans or leather pants. For lack of a better term, I need tops for nights out, but really, going out tops for moms who aren’t wearing crop tops or anything that requires a special bra. I would say just kidding, but I’m not really kidding. If a dress or top requires a special bra these days, I’m typically out unless it’s a really special piece and occasion. That’s where I’m at in life, and I’m okay with it.
I find when we’re going out with friends or even just us, i have the hardest time getting dressed. I can never figure out what to wear, and it’s mostly because I want to wear jeans or pants and can’t find a top to wear with them. I really need more tops to wear out to add into the rotation that I can throw on with a pair of heels and look great, but I’m finding them hard to come by. At this age, I want something that covers and as I said doesn’t require any specialty undergarments but that also feels elevated and makes me feel good. It’s been harder to find tops that fit those requirements than I thought, so when I find a good going out top that I love, I’ll spend a bit more on it. They tend to sell out — I don’t know why retailers don’t stock up on a lot of sizes on these types of tops — so I’ll often buy when I see rather than waiting for them to go on sale, whereas I feel like almost everything else you can wait and it’ll go on sale these days.
