As I mentioned, the Cannes Film Festival is my favorite red carpet event of the year, and this year’s Cannes gowns are simply magical. But the idyllic seaside south of France setting also brings daytime chic like no other. It’s a modern ladylike elegance that’s both effortless and flawlessly polished, and it just makes you wish you lived in a time and place where you had cause to dress like that all the time. (Somehow the grime of the concrete jungle that is NYC, especially when the weather heats up, just doesn’t inspire the crisp breezy whites and polished pastel Chanel sheaths of Cannes — unless perhaps you are among the Park Avenue ladies who lunch set, although that concept seems like a bygone era, and I digress…) The point is, the daytime Cannes outfits are (almost) just as good as the red carpet gowns and inspire the same kind of ‘Can I be her?’ reaction that we all felt when we saw Amal Clooney get off that boat in Venice wearing a white jumpsuit and hat, or how I imagine people felt every time Jackie O stepped out. In any event, I want to be all of these.
