Yeah, a denim skirt is a closet staple. But staples usually feel so… ok, I’ll say it, basic, sometimes. It’s not that I don’t see the value in classic pieces — these days, that’s basically all I’m investing in. And my style definitely runs on the classic side, with lots of basics you can wear season after season. It’s just that when the classic is the same old one you wore as a kid, it can be tough to figure out how to wear that piece, aka a denim skirt, in a way that feels fresh and age-appropriate. But I’m actually coming around to denim skirts. They’re everywhere now that it’s getting warm, and they’re so easy to pull off. And it feels like every couple of years, they’re once again the hottest item to have in your closet — and with good reason. They go with everything. In fact, the easiest way to wear a denim skirt in summer it to treat it like a pair of jeans. It pretty much goes with everything.
A denim skirt is a slightly more dressy version of denim cutoffs. It’s perfect if you want to look like you tried a little harder, but don’t want anything too fancy or fussy. It’s for those times when a sundress feels too much for the occasion or your mood, but cutoffs feel a little too casual or if you’re just not a shorts person. My favorite ways to wear a denim skirt are to pair it with a t-shirt and sneakers or flip-flops for running errands, camp pick-up, the farmer’s market. For a bbq or casual date night, I’ll wear a denim skirt with a cute top and fun sandals. In an A-list midi style and paired with heels, a denim skirt can even work for the office, perfect for a casual Friday vibe.
