Black pants have always been a closet staple that go with everything. Even in high school, I always had my jeans and my “black pants” for going out/when I wanted something a bit nicer lol. Anyone else? But in leather, they give instant cool-girl cred to any outfit, adding the perf amount of edge and style to everything from basic tees and slouchy sweatshirts to preppy oxfords and sweaters. They’re a wardrobe staple I always recommend adding to your winter wardrobe or capsule closet. They’re surprisingly versatile, and really upgrade any look, so they’re great to sub in when you want to wear a skirt or dress but it’s too cold, to make a sweater work for a night out, holiday party or event, or to the office. You know I don’t really buy maternity clothes when pregnant, but I always tell my friends who are expecting to buy a pair of maternity leather pants for all the reasons above adn because they work great with the roomier tops you often wear when pregs. It’s funny because it’s just a change in texture, but I think leather pants can feel intimidating to many, and i often get asked how to style black leather pants.
Honestly, the hardest part to figuring out how to style black leather pants is figuring out which shoes to wear with them. In terms of picking a top, other than not wearing a leather jacket or other leather piece on top (unless you’re feeling the biker or dominatrix vibes), you’re good. I love mixing with texture and styles that plays against the leather. So wearing leather pants with a chunky knit or more fitted cashmere sweater, tucking in a crisp button-down shirt, topping them with a more feminine blouse or top. You really have a lot of options when figuring out how to style black leather pants depending on the time of day and occasion.
Footwear, however, can get a bit trickier. If you’re wearing a skinny style, consider pumps or sandals or ballet flats that show a bit of skin on the foot or wear a chunky ankle boot that has a wide shaft to counter the skinny hemline or a tall boot for a more flattering look. For a wider leg style, I would follow the same recipe, but you can also wear a pointy toe pump or boot covered by a flare or straight leg. Stick with a pointy-toe to elongate the line, which is more flattering. For that same reason, stick with a black boot rather than breaking up your leg with another hue. If you’re doing flats or a heel that allows skin to peek out, you can mix in a different shade or texture for the shoe.
Those are my top tips for how to style leather pants and here are a few ideas for how to wear them.
